The 2017 Dallas County Relay for Life event

The annual Dallas County Relay for Life event returns tomorrow, with a full evening of activities to benefit the American Cancer Society.

Registration will run from 2-4 p.m. at the Perry High School Track. The opening ceremony will begin at 4, with a welcome by organizers, as well as the national anthem and a prayer. During the opening ceremony, attendees will be addressed by Kirk VanKirk, who is this year’s Honorary Survivor. Following that, participants will have their first opportunities to go around the track with the survivor lap, caregiver lap, and team lap. At 5 p.m., the survivor and community dinner will be served, and the meal is free for any cancer survivors.

The laps around the track will also start at 5 and run through 9. Themes include the Scrabble and frisbee golf laps, the always popular “Bras for a Cause” and “Tutus for Tatas” laps, and “Bra Pong” laps. The last hour of the event will include Zumba led by Dallas County Hospital, as well as the glow laps. The Luminaria will begin at 9 p.m., and participants are reminded to purchase their luminary bag by 8. The event will conclude with the “Fight Back” and closing ceremonies. Other activities throughout the evening include: the Kick Cancer Collection Connection, where everyone can lay out their loose change on the track; music by Randy “Doc” McCaulley from 6:30-7:30; a silent auction running through 8; and an assortment of other games.

All proceeds raised during the event will go towards the American Cancer Society. Relay for Life is annually the biggest fundraiser for the organization, providing millions of dollars from around the country for cancer research.
