A West Des Moines man, who was charged with a felony for first degree theft in Guthrie County, pled guilty to a lesser charge before being sentenced Monday.
According to court documents, 28-year-old Elijha Deandrade Sinbad Rivera pled guilty to an amended charge for third degree theft for an incident that occurred earlier this year. According to the criminal complaint on June 6th a Guthrie County Deputy initiated a traffic stop on Rivera for speeding. It was later discovered that the vehicle Rivera was driving was reported stolen by the Des Moines Police Department. Rivera claimed that the car was owned by the victim who gave him permission to drive it to Bagley. Rivera told authorities that he was dropping off the car for the victim at a residence in Bagley, but the homeowner said he never met or heard of the victim.
Rivera received deferred judgment and was sentenced to one year probation. He must pay for court costs, a civil penalty of $625, a law enforcement surcharge of $125, and a restitution fee of up to $1,200. Additionally, Rivera also pled guilty to a misdemeanor for driving with a revoked license. He received a deferred judgment and was sentenced to one year probation.
