The high school football regular season is two-thirds over. Greene County can still make the Class 2A playoff field, and winning the last three games on the schedule would be the best recipe to get there. Following a 16-8 Friday night Class 2A District 9 loss at Carroll Athletic Stadium to Kuemper Catholic in the Knights’ Homecoming game, the Rams stand at 5-1 overall and 1-1 in the district. Kuemper Catholic is 2-0 in the district and 3-3 overall.
Only the nine district champions are guaranteed to make the playoffs with the other playoff berths in the field of 16 being determined by the RPI (Ratings Percentage Index) from the Iowa High School Athletic Association. The Rams were number four in RPI prior to their first loss of the season. The week started with just four unbeatens in 2A, and that list is now down to two after Spirit Lake also lost. PCM (Monroe) and Algona are the lone unbeatens in the class at 6-0. With three weeks to go, there are 10 one-loss teams and a number of teams with two losses are still in the hunt. The new RPI is expected to be released Monday afternoon.
Red Oak is also 2-0 in District 9 and 4-2 overall after defeating winless Shenandoah 57-23. OABCIG (Ida Grove) is 1-1 in the district and 5-1 overall after it won 39-16 in Atlantic, while the Trojans fell to 0-2 in district play and 2-4 overall.
Greene County hosts Atlantic on Oct. 5 in the annual Homecoming game at Allensworth Field, followed by a road trip to Red Oak on Oct. 12, and a home game on Oct. 19 vs. OABCIG to close the regular season.
Friday night’s game with the Trojans can be heard on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com. Coverage begins at 6 p.m. with kickoff at 7 p.m.
