Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds recently signed a proclamation lifting a ban on overweight vehicles hauling grain on the roads.

During the harvest season, Governor Reynolds is temporarily suspending the state’s overweight and oversize restrictions, not exceeding 90,000 pounds gross weight, for transporting corn, soybeans, hay, straw, silage and stover, without a permit for 60 days.

The proclamation allows loads to be transported on all highways within Iowa, with the exception of the interstates, and those that do not exceed the maximum of 90,000 pounds gross weight. The proclamation additionally allows for those that do not exceed the maximum axle weight limit determined under the non-primary highway maximum gross weight table under Iowa Code 321.463(5)(b) by more than 12.5-percent, and does not exceed the legal maximum axle weight limit of 20,000 pounds.

The Iowa Department of Transportation is charged with monitoring the system to ensure the public’s safety and facilitate the movement of trucks during the harvest season. The proclamation is from September 15th through November 13th.
