Perry Hometown Heritage is hosting an event tomorrow night that will kick off two months of programming, and the focus is on immigration in the United States.
“Becoming American” is a documentary film and discussion series which Hometown Heritage applied for about a year ago. Alissa Whitmore is serving as Program Coordinator for the series, and she says there are several events scheduled between now and November 5th. The first focuses on Perry itself and will be held at 6 p.m. tomorrow at La Poste. “Little Salsa on the Prairie” was made about 10 years ago and tells the story of Perry’s immigrant history. Filmmaker Jody Swilky will introduce the documentary, and will also lead the discussion afterwards. The program is free to attend, but Whitmore advises attendees to bring money for tacos provided by El Tren.
Events later in September include film viewings at the State Historical Museum in Des Moines on the 25th, and at Perry High School on the 30th. Whitmore says the entire program will be informative and entertaining, while also being topical. “One of the things that Hometown Heritage is really interested in is our history. And so Perry has always really been a community of immigrants, really going back to our foundation. So it’s an important part of our story, and it’s an important part of the story of America. So it’s an excellent thing to come out, learn some about other cultures, and talk to your fellow citizens!”
