guthrie county fairIn just a few days it will be Guthrie County’s turn to showcase 4-H and FFA projects, stroll down the midway and enjoy evening entertainment to bring summer to a close. The Guthrie County Fair is this Thursday-Sunday at the Fairgrounds and Event Center in Guthrie Center. This year’s theme is “Dancing with the Steers.”

Carnival rides are once again free this year with the price of admission. Cost to enter is $8 for those age five and older on any day and those under five are free. There are also passes for $20 which are good for the entire fair. This does not include camping fees or Friday and Saturday’s grandstand events.

Evening entertainment includes the Bill Riley Talent Search on Thursday, mutton busting and the rodeo on Friday, a concert on Saturday featuring the Pork Tornadoes Band, and the free Figure 8 Races on Sunday. Other featured events include the Guthrie County Fair Queen coronation ceremony on Saturday, and the monster arm wrestling contest on Sunday.

Within the last year the Guthrie County Fair Board has implemented some upgrades to buildings and paid off the mortgage on the new event center. Fair Board President Grant Sheeder talks about another touching addition to the fairgrounds. “We also have a bridge going from our carnival area over to our campground in memory of Gerald Simmons. His family who built that down there. Really beautiful bridge down there with lights that light up in the nighttime and get people to and from the carnival to the campground with ease.”

Raccoon Valley Radio’s Big Red Radio will be at the fair Thursday-Sunday from 10am-6pm and Monday from 10am-3pm. We’ll be broadcasting live, playing music, and making local announcements. To hear more about the fair, listen to Sheeder on today’s Let’s Talk Guthrie County program.
