Greene County opened the 2018 high school volleyball season with a victory over Perry and a loss to Ft Dodge St. Edmond. The action was in the middle school gym in Jefferson and the triangular was the Greene County head coaching debut for Chris Heisterkamp. She started the season 1-0 with a 25-13, 25-21 victory vs. Perry. The second match was  three set loss to St. Edmond 24-26, 25-15, 9-15.

The first set vs. Perry saw the Rams expand an 8-7 lead to win handily. Set two vs. the Jayettes was close with the score tied 16-16 and Greene County up 22-21 before scoring the final three points.

St. Edmond also defeated Perry in two straight. Against the Rams, the Gaels trailed 14-11 in set one, but jumped ahead 22-17, then it was the Rams’ turn to rally, tying the score 23-23 and 24-24, before the Gaels scored the final two points. Set two saw the Rams control most of the way. Leading 16-8, Greene County stretched it out to win by 10. The third and deciding set looked good for the Rams as they were up 9-7, but the Gaels scored the final eight points for the set and match victory.

Coach Heisterkamp reports Lily Muir and Brazilian foreign exchange student Luisa Slompo each recorded four kills vs. Se. Edmond, and they each had two kills vs. Perry. The coach said she saw many good things on opening night from her team, but added, “We also saw areas on which we can focus to grow stronger for our next competition. Overall, very pleased with the fight we put into tonight’s matches. I’m confident that progress will come because this group of girls wants to work hard and compete at the highest level possible.”
