On Sunday, Panora based non-profit Tori’s Angels will host their 9th Annual Breakfast Benefit at the Panora Community Center. Since their inaugural benefit in 2010, in support of Guthrie Center teen Tori Heckman, the organization has financially supported 41 children in their battles with life-threatening illnesses.
Foundation Board Chairman Bill Ridgley says they would not have been able to pass that mark without the support from everyone in Guthrie County and the surrounding communities.
“People have been so generous that we’ve been able to keep our arms wide open and accept new applications as they come in. It’s really a blessing from the Lord that we’ve been able to not limit our size and scope…We just want to keep taking on children (and) reducing the financial risk for parents that have tremendous worries with children that have these life-threatening medical conditions.”
Tori’s Angels currently sponsors 33 children, including seven that are current or former Guthrie County residents. Those seven include Heckman, as well as Emma Reinhart, Emma King, Morgan Sheeder, Emma Dahl, Finley Jesko, and Sammy Beal. Of the 33 currently sponsored, 70% are battling some form of cancer. For every child, Ridgley says they cover on average about $7,000 per year in medical and travel related expenses.
The benefit on Sunday is from 8am-1pm at the Panora Community Center and will include breakfast for a free-will donation and a silent auction.
