Like several high school football teams across Iowa, the West Central Valley Wildcats held sports drink scrimmage Friday evening. The Wildcats welcomed the Clarke Indians to Stuart for a preseason contest before this week’s season opener. Wildcat fourth-year head football coach Eric Addy joined the Wahl McAtee Tire and Service Center Guthrie County PM Sports Page Monday evening to discuss his team’s play against the Indians. “I was very pleased with the effort our guys gave,” Addy said, “I thought we had a good showing, not a great showing. I’m not saying anything that any other football coach across the United States (of America) is saying where you can always get better. (I was) definitely pleased with the effort we gave (last Friday).”

Among the things Addy says the team needs to work on before Friday’s game with Des Moines Christian is their pass defense. “Because Clarke has a run-heavy offense, (we) got caught napping a couple of times in the secondary and let a couple of balls get over our heads,” Addy said, “Which you don’t want to do if you want to have success. I know this week (Des Moines Christian) will be throwing the ball around the yard. They got some good athletes and a really good quarterback, so we’re going to have to (get our secondary) shore up.”

The 2018 West Central Valley varsity football team kicks off their regular season schedule Friday night in Urbandale against the Des Moines Christian Lions.
