A brand new youth wrestling club in Guthrie County is hosting it’s first summer camp this upcoming weekend at West Central Valley High School. Four area dads with a passion for the sport started the P3 Wrestling Club, and the AAU organization is focusing on high reps technique drilling for its athletes. The Raccoon Valley Radio Network spoke with P3 Wrestling Club president and head coach Matt Welch Friday morning. Welch says the types of drills they’ll focus on will work on an athlete’s muscle memory. “I think muscle memory is key in wrestling,” Welch said, “You have to be able to execute a technique without thinking about how to do it. You achieve that through repetitiveness.”

Welch adds this weekend’s camp will feature a well-known opening speaker from the state. “Nick Ackerman, who is a Dan Hoge Trophy winner and National Champion from Simpson College,” Welch said, “Any of you that know Nick or know the sport of wrestling know that Nick (Ackerman) is actually a double amputee. He’s going to talk about what wrestling has done for his life.”

Those interested in signing up for the P3 Wrestling Club can do so Saturday morning starting at 9:30 a.m. at West Central Valley High School. The cost is $45 and includes admission into the weekend camp. Those interested in attending the camp only can do so for $20 for preschool and kindergarten students and $40 for youth first grade through senior in high school.
