Later this week members of the Adel-Desoto-Minburn Tigers cross country teams will find out who’ll be a part of this year’s Harrier Club. The Harrier Club was created by ADM head cross country coach David Zwank early in his 15-year coaching career. Similar to a summer reading program, the Harrier Club rewards ADM runners who logged at least 100 miles ran during the 10 weeks off between school years. Zwank provides incentives to those student-athletes who surpass the mileage goal. “Based on their mileage, we give them a t-shirt, and put their name on a little plaque,” Zwank said, “They have to turn in a log (of their mileage) in order to (be named to the Harrier Club). Everyone can do that based on their schedules.”
Zwank says he tries to do his best at respecting a student-athletes time during the summer, allowing them to work their offseason training around work schedules and other time commitments. Zwank breaks the Harrier Club down into three tiers. The first tier is any runner who reaches or surpasses 100 miles ran. Tier two is any runner who reaches or exceeds 150 miles, and tier three is anyone who runs more than 175 miles. The 2018 practice season for ADM fall sports began yesterday. The first competition for the ADM Cross Country teams isn’t until Saturday, September 1 in Urbandale.
