Iowa High School Athletic Association rules have allowed for football teams to workout all summer with helmets. Now that official practice is underway, Greene County head coach Mitch Moore goes through what’s allowed and when this first week. “We’ve already run a thousand football plays with helmets on this summer. Last year at this time we had run zero. Now our guys know the “why”. Last year you’d hold a play card up and we’d tell them this is what where running, this is where it’s going, and this is what I want you to do. Now, we know why we’re running it and they know the terminology. Our kids have had rep after rep after rep this summer, so it’s really helped us grow.”
The coach added, “After three days of helmets, you can put the shoulder pads on Thursday and Friday. Saturday is when everyone can have their first full padded scrimmage.”
