Practical Farmers of Iowa will be hosting a Field Day event at a Jefferson farm.

Scott Shriver of Shriver Farms will lead a program on “Weed Control for Organic Row Crops” on Tuesday, August 7th from 5 to 8pm. Shriver will go over different practices he’s used on his 2,000-acre organic farm to control weeds. About 1,500-acres are considered organic soybean and corn, while the remaining acres are small grain and alfalfa. Guests will hear about the different equipment that Shriver has used including hoes, harrows, cultivators and flamers, along with no-till planting practices for soybeans into cereal rye as a cover crop mulch.

The event also includes a meal. Reservations need to be made today by contacting Debra Boekholder via debra@practicalfarmers.org or calling 515-232-5661. The Field Day is free and is sponsored by Albert Lea Seed, Iowa Farmers Union, Organic Crop Improvement Association’s Chapter 1 of Iowa, Pipeline Foods and SunOpta.

Shriver Farms is located at 1276 270th Street southwest of Jefferson.
