A small town in the Raccoon Valley Radio listening area will be gearing up for a big celebration next weekend. There will be plenty of events and activities for all ages to enjoy during Dexter’s 150th Anniversary celebration August 3-5.
The festivities begin Friday with the recognition of honored citizens, introductions of the Grand Marshals, and costume and look-a-like contests at 6pm at the Roundhouse. Following that will be the community potluck at 6:30 and the pie contest and auction at 7.
Saturday’s slate begins with the Kiddie Parade at 9am in front of the post office followed by the Grand Parade at 10. The theme for this year’s parade is “The Original One Horse Town.” From 11am-1pm a meal will be provided by the Dexter Sons of the American Legion at the legion hall. The menu includes pulled pork sandwiches, baked beans, chips, and a drink for a free will donation. There will be plenty of kids activities and historical presentations given by Rod Stanley in the afternoon.
The evening concludes with the Variety Show at the Roundhouse starting at 7pm. Co- Chair Teresa Nolte-Pinkert talks about some of the types of performances during the show. “We’re going to start from the 1860s through the present time. Have a little bit of history and some entertainment. We have vaudeville acts for the 1890s and some ragtime from the 1900s, some jazz possibly. In the 40s we have the war-time theme with Kate Smith singing God Bless America (and) the 50s we have Hank Williams and Miss Minnie Pearl. Howdy!”
The weekend will end with some activities on Sunday. Raccoon Valley Radio’s Big Red Radio will also be there from 9am-noon on August 4th. We’ll be broadcasting live, playing music and making local announcements. To hear more about the celebration, listen to today’s Let’s Talk Guthrie County program.
