Dallas Co Sheriff Badge

The Dallas County Sheriff’s Office has a responsibility to patrol and assist every city in the County, but every once in a while a city would like some additional service.

To that end, the County has entered into 28E agreements with three cities — including Dallas Center, Redfield, and most recently Dexter — to provide extra coverage throughout the week. Sheriff Chad Leonard explains what the cities receive through the agreements. “It basically assigns a deputy to that area for a specific amount of time. Now, we obviously run 24 hours a day and we have cars on the north side of the County and the south side of the County, and they were already in those communities. Now they’re to spend more time there.”

Leonard adds, each city with an agreement pays for a specific minimum amount of coverage, and the contracts are negotiated based off what the deputies make on average per hour. The Sheriff’s Office dedicates a minimum of 80 hours a week to patrol Dallas Center, 20 hours for Redfield, and Dexter receives 10 hours.
