There were a number of reasons the Greene County High School softball team had its lowest win total in more than a decade. The Rams were 8-19 under the direction of veteran head coach Tom Kennedy. Inexperienced players, including the pitchers, played a role. A team batting average of .252 was a factor, and 87 errors in 26 games that were actually played. Greene County received a forfeit from PCM (Monroe) late in the season.
That’s 3.34 errors per game, and that doesn’t count the number of plays that perhaps could have been made, but did not go down as errors in the scorebook. Five position players were charged with between 11 and 15 errors on the season, and the team fielding percentage was .883. One of the bright spots defensively came from the catching position as Greene County catchers threw out 21 of 58 would be base stealers. Leading the way from behind the plate were two seniors. Faith Davis caught nine of 21 on the bases, while Samantha Hardaway nabbed seven of 14 on the base paths.
