The Iowa high school State baseball tournament continues through Saturday at Principal Park in Des Moines. Once that’s finished there’s a short turnaround before Fall sports start for the 2018-19 school year. In fact, the Greene County Rams and most football teams in the state begin playing games one month from today. Coach Mitch Moore’s Rams travel to Perry on Aug. 24 to take on the Blue Jays in the annual “Battle for the Cowbell”, which Perry won in overtime at Dewey Field last October.
Moore is in his second season heading Greene County’s football program. Jeff Lamoureux returns for his second season as the girls and boys coach of the cross-country Rams. State qualifier Haley Hall graduated, but much of the girls’ team from last season returns. Earlier this summer, Chris Heisterkamp was named Greene County’s head volleyball coach. She’s a former assistant volleyball coach for the Rams. All-conference performer Megan Durbin graduated, but other letter winners return.
Greene County and Boone have a shared athletic agreement for swimming and a handful of Greene County students are expected to swim for Boone.
Monday, August 6 is the first official day of practice for all Fall sports in Iowa high schools.
