Greenfield Municipal Utilities (GMU) has issued a Bottled Water Advisory for all customers until further notice.
During a routine testing of the water supply’s turbidity, or cloudiness, the samples showed levels at 2.5 turbidity units, well above the standard of 1 unit. Additionally, observations indicated the presence of a blue-green algae bloom on the lake. Because of these two factors, there is an increased chance the water could contain disease-causing organisms and compounds that could cause adverse health effects.
Therefore, GMU is recommending all customers use an alternate source of water, such as bottled water. Customers should also refrain from boiling the water, as doing so will not destroy compounds potentially produced by the algae, which may become more concentrated as a result of boiling.
Southern Iowa Rural Water Association customers may also be affected. They will be notified directly if they are under the advisory. Raccoon Valley Radio will bring you more information as it becomes official.
