The Greene County Farmers Market has been through its first two weeks and if you’ve been to a market this year, you may have noticed a new face.
Auburn resident Haley Diem is the new Farmers Market On-Site Manager. She takes over from Jack Schilling who held that post for the last two years. She moved to Iowa from Minnesota with her partner Riley to be closer to his family. She says she and Riley have cultivated one-acre of land from their farm “Thunder Moon Farms.”
“We’ve grown (produce) through a program called WOOF which is Worldwide Opportunities On Organic Farms. It’s sort of like a farm internship program where you can stay at a farm, and in exchange for labor-generally around 20-hours per week-you get room and board. So they feed you and they give you a place to stay.”
Diem talks about how she got involved with the Greene County Farmers Market.
“We heard wonderful things from everyone in the area about the Greene County Farmers Market (about) how there’s a great sense of community, it’s a great gathering place. We didn’t hear that much great things about other small farmers markets in our area. So we’re actually commuting about one-hour to the Greene County Farmers Market to sell.”
Diem will be responsible for on-site operations of each farmers market, which are every Tuesday through September 25th from 4 to 6:30pm on the eastside of the Greene County Courthouse. She adds that her favorite part about the farmers market is sharing someone’s harvest with the public.
