If you’ve ever wanted to give fishing a try, but didn’t want to go through the trouble of getting a license, this is the perfect weekend for you.
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is hosting their annual free fishing weekend from June 1st through 3rd, where anyone with a pole and a desire can head out to any public body of water and fish until their heart’s content. The DNR emphasizes that normal regulations still apply, but you are not required to have a license to catch fish this weekend. Additionally, conservation departments across the state are hosting free fishing events, including in Dallas County. Forest Park Museum Curator Pete Malmberg says their event will be on Sunday from 4:30-6:30 p.m.
“(At) our Glissman Conservation Area — which is a fantastic area, it’s got a nice seven-acre fishing pond down in the southern end of the County — we will have a family fishing fun clinic, to learn how to fish. This is Iowa’s free fishing weekend, so we’re helping promote that, too. Glissman Pond has a good population of bluegill and bass, and it’s a great place for beginning and experienced anglers.”
Malmberg adds, pre-registration is requested but not required for the program, and it’s also weather-dependant. They will have some fishing gear available to use, but people are encouraged to bring their own. To find other free fishing events throughout Iowa, click the link below.
