This year’s Summer Reading Program at the Jefferson Public Library begins tomorrow.
The theme is “Libraries Rock” and Children’s Librarian Terry Clark says they are offering a variety of activities from crafts and games, to movies, books and free events that are related to the theme. Even though there are lots of activities happening this summer, Clark reminds everyone that the basis of the Summer Reading Program is to encourage kids to read books.
“Studies have shown that children who read over the summer maintain their reading skills and also improve them. And that’s very important because those skills get lost during the summer. There’s so many great activities to do over the summer time, we want to ensure these children have a good start in the fall.”
As extra incentives, Clark notes that there will be several opportunities for participants to earn prizes.
“We’ve got prizes that the children will be earning throughout the program. And then the final party is July 30th and we will have the children doing different activities, and we will also be drawing for the grand prize, which is a brand new bicycle. And that’s always an exciting prize.”
The kids Summer Reading Program is for youth ages four-years-old through fifth grade. Registrations are now open for the free program.
