June’s program with the Greene County Historical Society will highlight Jefferson’s own Olympic gold medalist.

Jefferson resident Don Orris will lead a presentation on Doreen Wilbur, the 1972 Olympic champion in women’s archery. Wilbur taught Orris the skill of archery, along with Doreen’s husband, Skeeter. Doreen passed away in 2008. He will also touch on the bronze statue of Doreen that sits at the intersection of Olive Street and Lincoln Way. He, the Wilburs and Phil Siglin taught a Junior Olympic Archery Development program, which started in the early 1980s. After a five-year hiatus, the program started back up with the Jefferson Parks and Recreation Department.

The program will be at 1pm this Friday at the First Presbyterian Church in Jefferson. The program is free and a lunch will be provided at noon for a small charge. Historical society members is $8 and non-members is $10 per person. Reservations for the meal must be made by the end of the day today by calling Historical Society Vice-President Nancy Hanaman at 515-436-7684.
