A possible gas leak that led to the temporary closure of a portion of the downtown square in Jefferson has been reopened.
Police Chief Mark Clouse tells Raccoon Valley Radio that the 100 block of East Lincoln Way was blocked off due to a possible gas leak. All area businesses were temporarily closed and all occupants were evacuated as a precaution. Around 12:10pm, Clouse says Alliant Energy crews were on scene and gave the all clear and everything was opened back up. Alliant Energy Spokesperson Justin Foss tells Raccoon Valley Radio that the leak was located inside one of the business owners in the area. Foss adds that Alliant crews shut off the gas to stop the leak and since the leak was found to be on the customer side of the pipe, it is up to the business owner to hire someone to fix the issue.
The Jefferson Police and Fire departments, as well as the Greene County Sheriff’s office assisted at the scene.
