Sunday morning will be full of events for one historical landmark in Greene County.

The annual Pleasant Hill Memorial Homecoming will take place at the Pleasant Hill Church, five miles southeast of Jefferson. The day starts at 9:30am with a service by the Central Christian Church of Jefferson, followed by the theme of “Old Time Revival.” Juice, coffee and Marianne Carlson’s cinnamon rolls will be served outside at 10am. The Central Christian Brass will then perform around 10:30. This year’s guest speaker, David Yepsen, who is a Jefferson native and host of Iowa Public Television’s “Iowa Press” will talk at 11.

Then at noon there will be a 21-gun salute in the churchyard by Kinkead-Martin Legion Post #583 of Rippey, followed by Wayne Lautner playing Taps. Lunch will consist of a potluck-style meal featuring fried chicken and attendees are encouraged to bring a side dish to share and their own tableware. Freewill donations will be accepted during the meal. Wrapping the day up at 1pm the non-profit organization that maintains the church, the Pleasant Hill Memorial Incorporated, will hold a meeting.

Greene County Historical Society is co-sponsoring the event. Board member Chuck Offenburger points out another highlight that is also included in the service portion of the event.

“The highlight of the service is Wallace Teagarden, who is in his 90s, gets up and does an oration. I mean he’s not just doing a speech, he’s doing an oration of the Gettysburg Address. He does it without notes. He’s been doing it since he was a junior high kid in Grand Junction.”

Offenburger invites the public to attend the event and people can check out the historical landmark, which dates back to 1881.
