Greene County opens the 2018 high school baseball season tonight at Perry. It’s not only game one of the season for Greene County, but the first game for John Hupp, the former player for the Rams, as the program’s head coach. The Blue Jays are 0-2, losing to Heart of Iowa Activities Conference schools Roland-Story (Story City) and North Polk (Alleman). Greene County is also a member of the HOIAC.

Coach Hupp was asked how he feels about his team going into the opener. “I’m pretty confident. We have the pitching there that we expected, and I think our hitting has tremendously improved from our day one look to day. I’m pleased with where we’re at and I think we’re definitely ready to have a really good season.”

The coach commented about his team playing its first game compared to tonight being Perry’s third. “That makes a little bit of difference. They get to have those first game jitters out of the way. We did a controlled scrimmage and I saw some first inning jitters that day, but then they settled down, so hopefully, those are out of the way and they’re be ready to go from the first pitch.”

Tonight’s varsity contest can be heard around 7:30 p.m. on KDLS 1310 AM, 99.7 FM, and streamed on the Raccoon Valley Radio Network with Shawn Kenney on the call.
