It’s all finals and all on the track today for the third and final day of the 2018 Iowa High School State Track & Field Coed Meet at Drake Stadium in Des Moines. Through the first two days, Raccoon Valley Radio area athletes have placed in the top eight 19 times, thus earning team points and medals.
Friday’s highest placing went to Greene County senior high jumper Megan Durbin. She was second in Class 2A, and completes her high school high jumping career with seven competitions at Drake Stadium, never finishing lower than second place. Durbin has two Drake Relays titles, a Drake Relays runner-up finish, a State title, and three State meet second place finishes to her credit. She hopes to add to that medal count this afternoon in the Class 2A 200 meter dash final.
Panorama’s Morgan Johnk was fourth in the 2A girls’ high jump. Like Durbin, she cleared 5′ 5″, but placed lower on misses. The Panthers also picked up fourth place team points in the discus throw from Lydia Knapp with a toss of 130′ 2″. The Panorama girls were fifth in the distance medley relay final in 4:17.03 with Bailey Beckman, Kassidy Bremer, Gwen Steffen, and Devyn Kemble.
Madison McDermott was seventh for ACGC in the 2A girls’ discus throw with a best toss of 121′ 9″, and John Locks of Woodward Academy was eighth in the 2A boys’ discus throw at 151′ 4″.
Area 1A athletes picked up some medals yesterday as well. The Nodaway Valley girls were fourth in the distance medley in 4:22.05 with Jocelyn Christensen, Sadie Marnin, Mallory Kuhns, and Reagan Weinheimer. The Earlham boys were fourth in the 4 x 200 meter relay in 1:32.24 with Lazerick Matchem, Devin Crees, Jason Hopp, and Jacob Ridgely.Earlham’s girls earned a point in the distance medley in 4:26.39 with Kaitlyn Nielsen, Kelcie Hale, Katie Noah, and Rachel Luke.
There are 12 events today area athletes qualified for finals in through preliminaries held Thursday or Friday, plus several others are in finals that were originally scheduled for today. That list includes the sprint medley relay, which gets things started today at 9 o’clock.
