2018 Greene County Relay for Life logoThe 22nd Annual Greene County Relay for Life event is happening this Saturday.

The event takes place at the Greene County Community Center and it starts at 9:30am with team check-ins, along with luminaria sales, silent auction and 50/50 cash raffle tickets sales. Registrations for the Heroes in Training and the 5K run/walk, along with the cancer survivor reception, will also begin at 9:30.  The survivor walk will start at 10:20 out of the east doors of the community center, leading up to the Doreen Wilbur statue for the beginning of the Heroes in Training run up the downtown square at 10:30. Following the 5K run/walk at 10:45am, there will be a community beef and pork barbecue meal from 11am to 1pm.

Other activities includes a slate of entertainment inside the community center. At 11am the Town and Country Band will perform, followed by the Greene County High School jazz band at 11:30. Then at 11:50 is the Greene County Singers, with a special sponsor recognition at 12:10pm. The entertainment wraps up with the Prairie Blue Creative Arts dancers at 12:25pm.

After all silent auction bidding, luminaria and the raffle ticket sales close, there will be some announcements around 1:45pm, followed by the luminaria ceremony, which Event Chair Tori Riley says is a great way to end the event.

“It’s the signature ending for Relay for Life. It’s a time to really think about all the people who have touched your life. We honor survivors and then there are the ‘in memories of’ and it’s just a quieter time to just really think. It reminds us why we come together every single year to have this Relay for Life. So we’ve got fewer people to remember and more people to celebrate.”

Raccoon Valley Radio’s Big Red Radio will also be there broadcasting live from 9am to noon, while also playing music and making local announcements.
