This week is Severe Weather Awareness Week. Each day Raccoon Valley Radio has highlighted a specific topic, with today’s being flash floods. Adair and Guthrie County Emergency Management Agency Coordinator Bob Kempf reminds residents to make sure they have an evacuation plan in place in the event their home is impacted by flood waters. He also cautions motorists to be aware of washed out roads and hydroplaning. Kempf says it takes only about six inches to float a car.

Additionally Kempf says it’s imperative to obey any and all evacuation orders. “Make sure that you obey the evacuation orders. We see every year where people are sneaking back in (to their homes) and somebody loses their life because they just thought they needed this trinket from home. If they tell you that they need to be out, there’s a reason.”

After a flood, Kempf recommends checking for food spoilage and contaminated water in rural areas. As always be sure to tune into Raccoon Valley Radio’s Severe Weather Action Team during any threat of severe weather. We will provide up-to-the-minute information on storm forecasts, road conditions, and any event cancellations or delays.

The one to count on for severe weather information is the Raccoon Valley Radio Network.
