A Paton-Churdan student will be performing at Monday’s Iowa High School Speech Association All-State Individual Events Festival.
Junior Megan Carey qualified as a performing act for her prose piece called “Mum on the Run” by Laura Mazza. She explains what the story is about. “It’s about this mom who goes to yoga class and farts in the middle of like yoga class. So it’s a super funny piece. It’s just a six-minute piece about a mom farting at yoga.”
Carey qualified for all-state after earning a Division I-rating by all three judges at the state competition and she received the judges recommendation to perform at all-state. She says her coach, Stephanie Pace, saw a Facebook post about it over the summer and wanted Carey to perform it for individual speech. Carey describes her initial reaction when she found out she had qualified for all-state.
“It was on spring break. I was in Branson, Missouri. Mrs. Pace texted me the picture of my qualification I guess. Anyway, I just sort of freaked out and I told my parents. I was just smiling for the next three hours.”
Carey will perform Monday at the University of Northern Iowa.
