It was a crazy week for one of the democratic candidates for United States Congressional District 3, and unfortunately it ended up not being quite enough.
Theresa Greenfield, who visited Perry on her campaign tour back in November, was one of the first candidates to submit her nomination papers ahead of the federal filing deadline. However, Thursday evening her campaign manager admitted he had forged some of the signatures on her nomination petition. Greenfield fired the individual and decided she wasn’t okay being on the primary ballot with knowledge of the forged signatures. What followed was a whirlwind 24 hours for the candidate, as she attempted to do in one day what normally takes several months to accomplish.
She needed to acquire nearly 1,800 signatures of voters in the third district, and she needed to do it before 5 p.m. last Friday. Greenfield said volunteers began scouring everywhere they could think of to get people’s signatures, though it became clear it wouldn’t be enough. Then unexpectedly, she began getting help from the staff and volunteers from other campaigns in Iowa. Each of the gubernatorial candidates chipped in support, and she even got help from fellow congressional candidate Pete D’Alessandro.
Greenfield brought her paperwork to the Secretary of State’s office by 4:53 p.m., had it signed by 4:59, and managed to have it stamped and in by 5 exactly. Unfortunately for her, only around 1,500 signatures were counted on her petition, so Greenfield will not make it onto the primary ballot. Regardless, she thanked everyone who had a hand in helping her out on Friday when many didn’t have to.
