The Greene County wrestling program held its awards night in the middle school gym in Jefferson on Monday. The 2017-18 season was the last for coach for Mark Sawhill. He’s been heading the program since 2008 and spent 19 years prior to becoming head coach as an assistant.
A season highlight for the Rams was finishing in second place to PCM (Monroe) at the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference tournament. It was an unusual season in that numbers were up, experience was down, and the middle of the season (Dec. 17-Jan. 18) was lost to a skin disease.
Greene County did not have any State Tournament qualifiers and that was the first time since 1989 no Rams qualified. Junior Brock Wuebker was a Sectional Tournament runner-up at 170 lbs. and third place finisher in the District tournament. Only the first and second place wrestlers qualified from District to State. Junior Clint Dennhardt qualified for the District by winning the Sectional at 182 lbs., but did not participant in the District due to a skin disease.
Seniors lettering were Cayden Gerdes, Isaac Ireland, and Leo Marques. Juniors Joe Anderson, Clint Dennhardt, Bryce Hoyle, and Brock Wuebker lettered. Sophomores earning letters were Will Hansen, Colby Kafer, Gage Michaelson, and Garrett Tasler. Chance McCollom and Brady Stauffer lettered as freshmen.
Cayden Gerdes was the team MVP and also recipient of the Jake Taggart award. The Logan Scheuermann award went to Sawyer Schiltz, and the Aaron Beaman award was presented to Colby Kafer. Clint Dennhardt received the Brad Badger award, with Brock Wuebker receiving the Fred Watson award.
The Super Booster award went to Ryan Tasler.
