When the Class 1A section of the Iowa State Wrestling tournament opens later today, the Panorama Panthers will be well represented. The Class 1A wrestling session doesn’t begin until 6 p.m. tonight and will feature first-round championship, and first-round consolation matches spread out amongst eight mats. Representing Panorama at the state tournament include Danny Nordquist (126), Wyatt Appleseth (132), Gunnar Grunsted (170), Trevor Carey (182), and Dalton Holmes (195).
Nordquist (126) closes his high school wrestling career as a first-time state qualifier, posting an overall record of 40-9. His opening match comes against Lisbon’s Cobe Siebrecht, winning 48 of his 49 grapples this season.
Appleseth (132) becomes Panorama’s first freshman to qualify for the Iowa State Wrestling tournament with a mark of 41 wins and nine losses. His first match comes against Wapsie Valley’s Donny Schmit with a record of 43-2.
Grunsted (170) is familiar with the lore of Wells Fargo Arena, making his third trip to the state tournament this year with a record of 43-4. His initial match comes against AHSTW Gabe Pauley whose undefeated in 52 grapples this winter.
Carey (182) is also closing his high school wrestling career as a first-time state qualifier with a record of 42-8. His Wells Fargo Arena debut comes against Louisa-Muscatine senior Hunter Connor, undefeated in 40 matches this season.
Finally, Holmes (195) returns to Wells Fargo Arena as a two-time state qualifier with 39 wins and six losses. His first match comes against Sumner-Fredericksburg senior Brock Meyer with a mark of 39-7.
