The ACGC Charger boys basketball team was seconds away from their first win in 60 days. However Woodward-Granger’s Kaya Bowlsby knocked in a buzzer beater off the box to crush the Chargers on Senior Night. The Hawks got their second win over the Chargers with a 52-51 victory.
The Chargers had the lead for most of the game, riding a wave of three-pointers. ACGC dropped a season high ten shots from the arc. They took a 32-20 lead into the locker room at the half, but W-G’s Bryce Achenbach woke up in the second half. The sophomore scored 13 points in the second half, ending the night leading all scores with 17. Classmate Keith Braunschweig also finished with 16. Senior Caden Wardyn led the Chargers with 14 points, while Bryce Littler and Quynton Younker each contributed ten. Other seniors Quenton Spack and Collin Stowe recorded a total of 14 points in the loss.
The Charger girls also dropped their game against the Hawks. Lone active senior Mady Smith made just one three-pointer in the 29-37 defeat. Senior Kaitlyn Peters led the Hawks with nine points, while sophomores Katelyn Scharlau and Natalie Helbling added a combined 15. Jadeyn Carrick led all Chargers with nine and set the Charger record for most points in a regular season with 158.
The girls drop to 2-19 on the season and the boys slip to 3-18. The Charger girls begin their playoff run in Avoca on Saturday against the AHSTW Vikings, while the boys will play the Hawks one more time to open the playoffs on Monday.
