Grand View Christian (Des Moines) won its 44th straight boys’ basketball game Tuesday night when the Thunder opened up a close game in the second half and downed Greene County in Jefferson, 86-57. The game was heard on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com.
Coach Dave Stubbs’ team is 18-0 this season and ranked second in Class 1A after winning the 1A State title a season ago. They shot 63% for the game and had five players score in double figures, led by senior Grand De Meulenaere with 29 points, 19 in the first half.
Greene County and GV Christian were tied 19-19 at the end of the first quarter. The Rams trailed by just five points at the half, 40-35, The visitors started pulling away in the third and led 61-49 at the end of that stanze. The Thunder erased any doubt with a 25-7 fourth quarter advantage.
The Rams were led in scoring by junior Trey Hinote with 26 points, 19 in the first half when he made all four of his three-point goals. Those were the only three-pointers the Rams made, compared to 10 for the Thunder. Greene County had 21 turnovers to 10 for Grand View Christian and the Rams shot 48% from field. Neither team was especially good from the foul line with the Thunder 10 of 19 and the Rams nine of 15.
Coach Chris Nelson’s team fell to 11-9 and the only game left on the regular season schedule is at Winterset around 2 p.m. Saturday. The Rams enter the Class 2A postseason on Monday, Feb. 12 vs. Panorama in Woodward at 6:30 p.m. The District 15 contest can be heard on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com.
