According to the Iowa Department of Public Health, the widespread influenza outbreak has claimed 77 lives since October 1st of 2017. While a particular estimate is unclear at this point, Adair County Public Health (ACPH) has also experienced an increase.
ACPH Community Health Coordinator Stephanie Claussen is particularly seeing the Type A strain, which can cause more serious health complications. Claussen is also seeing other types of illness on the rise. “This time of year there’s always lots of stomach bugs going around, such as norovirus. It does typically spread around the same time as influenza and causes more of the gastrointestinal illnesses. It is very contagious and can go through a household very quickly.”
She also mentions that while norovirus is similar to influenza, it is not the same. Influenza carries more respiratory symptoms such as fever, aches and pains, than the common stomach flu symptoms. In any case, Claussen mentions some basic, yet vital tips to stay healthy. “I just want to remind everyone that it’s not too late to get the flu shot. Make sure that you’re washing your hands. Cover your cough. Stay home when you’re sick. If you do get sick, make sure you get lots of fluids.”
