West Central Valley Wildcat

Several of Iowa top small class wrestling squads were in Truro Saturday for the annual Rich Gray Classic. The West Central Valley Wildcats were among the 14 schools represented at the tournament. Nine Wildcat wrestlers competed in the event with one making it to the championship match.

Senior Riley Algreen (195) pinned his way to the championship match of his weight class. He began the day with a third period pinfall victory over Martensdale St. Mary`s Aaron Allsup (4:44). Algreen’s quarterfinal match against Cardinal’s Frank Smith lasted 1:17 before ending in a win by fall. His semifinal round grapple against Des Moines East Christopher Alaverz finished 18 seconds into the second period. Woodward-Granger Cody Fisher, undefeated in 42 matches this winter, won by a 17-2 technical fall victory in the championship match.

West Central Valley had two middleweight wrestlers grapple in the third-place match of the Rich Gray Classic. Senior Tye Joint (145) and junior Cole Sackett (152) both finished in fourth place in their respective weight classes. Joint lost a 7-3 decision to Interstate 35’s Ethan Elliot. Sackett lost by pinfall in his third-place match against Interstate 35’s Brayden Egli.

The Wildcat wrestling team resumes their dual season Tuesday on the road in a nonconference quadrangular event against wrestlers from Clarinda Academy, Clarke Community, and Mount Ayr. First matches start at 5:30 p.m. at Clarinda Academy.
