Anyone in Jefferson looking to make improvements to their property, or build a new home or business, can qualify for a tax abatement.
City Administrator Mike Palmer says the City Council recently renewed the City’s three-year, 100-percent property tax abatement program.
“It allows for anybody in the whole community, if they make improvements on their building, it’s the taxable value of the improvements can get 100-percent tax relief for three years. If you build a new house, you get 100-percent tax relief on all your property taxes. Either way, people win on that one. It’s a good incentive to either build new or just add on.”
Palmer adds that this isn’t a new program, but every three years, the Council reviews it and decides whether or not to keep implementing it. He notes that it’s been a very successful program in the past, which is why the Council chose to keep it going.
