Genesis Development has officially opened a new facility in Adel that will offer a specialized service aimed at tackling one of the biggest health issues in Iowa: mental health.

The first Genesis Drop-In Center opened for operations on Wednesday, January 3, as a partnership with Heart of Iowa Community Services. The center is open to all adults with a mental health diagnosis who are wanting a place to meet peers and find support. Genesis plans to host activities at the Drop-In Center including potlucks, crafts, puzzles, video games, and more. They will also take input from participants on what they’d like to see in the future. In addition to the scheduled activities, members will be provided with information about resources such as general assistance, food and living, and counselling.

The center will be operated by Megan Hicks of Genesis Development, who said it will provide a needed, stigma-free, open space where someone with a mental illness can go to make friends and find support. Any person in Dallas, Greene, Guthrie, or Audubon County with a documented mental health diagnosis can utilize the center. After they have a meeting with Hicks and get the approval from Heart of Iowa Community Services, the individual can utilize the Drop-In Center as they wish.

The center is located at 2109 West Greene Street in Adel, next to the Genesis Development offices.
