With the second major snow event hitting Perry this past weekend, the snow ordinance was strictly enforced throughout the City.

Perry Police Chief Eric Vaughn says his officers issued 50 citations over the weekend to residents in violation of the ordinance. While the number seems high, Vaughn says it wasn’t necessarily out of the ordinary. “It’s fairly typical, definitely higher than we’d like to see. We definitely see those numbers go up with the violations when we have a snow occurrence on the weekends or during the holiday season. When you have a lot more people at home, and not going out so much. Or maybe friends and relatives over parking on the streets. So that’s when we generally see those numbers go up, especially the first time we issue citations. After we issue those citations, kind of that first snowfall, then people kind of get a reminder and become more in compliance.”

The Perry snow ordinance says whenever there is accumulation greater than half-an-inch, there is no parking allowed on public streets, alleys, or city parking lots. The ordinance will remain in effect for up to 48 hours after the snow event, or until the road is deemed clear. Anyone found in violation will be given a $25 ticket for their first offense, and if they are multiple offenders they could be fined up to $75. Additionally, if the accumulation is substantial, the City may tow vehicles parked on the streets at the owner’s expense.
