While many in Guthrie and Adair counties are pleased with the lack of snowfall and winter driving conditions, others may be dreaming of a white Christmas. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) gives the two-county area about a 40-50-percent chance of seeing a white Christmas.
NOAA uses historical snowfall and weather calculations from 1981-2010 to come up with the percentage windows. Specifically, the calculations measure: daily and monthly temperatures, precipitation, frost/freeze days, and other factors. According to NOAA, there must be at least one-inch of snow on the ground on Christmas Day to count as an official “white Christmas.”
According to NOAA’s map, the Greenfield station lists an even 45-percent chance that that particular station will receive the white Christmas.
