Greene County officially has a new County Assessor.

The Greene County Conference Board, which is made up of all the city mayors, school board representatives and county supervisors, approved hiring Adam Smith as the new county assessor. Smith was the deputy assessor under now retired assessor Linda Spearman. Spearman retired at the end of November after serving as county assessor for 12 years.

The Conference Board also approved Smith’s annual salary of $57,500 and in six months, his salary will increase to $60,000.

The selection process started with the County Examining Board, which consists of one representative from each of the three entities that are on the Conference Board. The Examining Board considers all eligible candidates for assessor and make a recommendation to the Conference Board. The Conference Board then makes the final decision on which candidate to hire for the position.

Smith started as county assessor Wednesday.
