The Jefferson Rotary Club met on Monday in regular session.

Rotarians learned about a clean water initiative with a organization called the Clean Water Alliance. Chair Harry Ahrenholtz said the group was founded in 2000 with 11 members. The original mission of the organization was to reduce nitrites in the Raccoon River and identify the health of the river. There are currently 20 members with associates and contributors as well. Ahrenholtz said in 2013, they established a Nutrient Reduction Strategy with a goal of reducing nitrogen and phosphorus by 45-percent.

Executive Director Roger Wolf spoke about the different practices to help reduce nitrites in the water. The practices include: cover crops, in field practices, drainage systems, edge of field practices, the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) and bioreactors.
