The numbers are way up for the Greene County High School wrestling team to 30. Head Coach Mark Sawhill and assistant Spencer Bauer are enthused with how many students are out for the sport. Some have wrestled for years, while others are out for the first time. Raccoon Valley Radio asked the head coach how they find a balance when coaching those brand new and the veterans. “We basically teach the basics again, making sure we have the fundamentals down solid, and that goes for everybody. Some of the guys that are a little more advanced can work on other things on their own when we get into “live” wrestling, so it all balances out pretty well. Some kids we know what to expect from them and we can work with them individually about different things and talk to them.”

The coach added some of the experienced wrestlers are helping the others. “It works out pretty well. Some of these older guys are helping out and teaching them things, and that makes a big difference. Sometimes pure teaching is a great thing to have.”

Greene County opens the season on Tuesday, Nov. 28 in Van Meter vs. the Ogden Bulldogs and the combined VM/Earlham team. The home opener is Thursday, Nov. 30 in the middle school gym in Jefferson vs. Carroll and Winterset.
