Greene County wrestling Media Day was on Wednesday and what hits anyone entering wrestling room at The Edge Sports Academy, where the Rams train, is the number of students out for the sport. That was the case two seasons ago as well, but that was in a negative way when less than 10 were on the team. This year, there are some 30 high schoolers out. Ram head coach Mark Sawhill commented about the increase to Raccoon Valley Radio. “It’s great, and with our junior high numbers around 24, it makes this a crowded room and we never thought this would be a crowded room. It’s great! It’s a good problem. We have a lot of kids and they’re enthusiastic. Some of them are picking up a new sport for the first time and really having a good time with it.”

Having numbers and being able to fill all 14 weight classes always helps, but especially when it comes to winning dual meets. Although the Greene County lineup isn’t 100 percent set, Coach Sawhill is confident the Rams will be able to fill all or nearly all the weights when the season opens on Nov. 28 in Van Meter vs. Ogden and the combined Van Meter/Earlham team. Receiving a forfeit when one team has an entry and the other doesn’t, is worth six points to the team, the same number of points for a fall.

The Rams open the home season on Thursday, Nov. 30 in the middle school gym in Jefferson vs. Carr0ll and Winterset.
