Halloween brings with it lots of fun, but also lots of potential hazards for drivers and trick-or-treaters alike. With that in mind, Perry Police Chief Eric Vaughn offers safety tips for the annual quest for candy.

First, he advises to make sure children are going trick-or-treating with an adult or responsible teenager. This includes holding their hands when crossing streets, especially if the child is wearing a mask that could obstruct their vision. He also reminds people to cross at intersections, as it can be difficult to see people through parked cars when crossing in the middle of the street. Additionally, costume choices can present visibility problems, so Vaughn says it’s a good idea to include something easily seen with any costume. “We have a lot of dark clothing (on) kids Halloween costumes. If they can put something reflective on their costume, whether it be a reflective strip, or maybe just to carry a flashlight, or some type of neon glow stick or something like that, so cars can see them when they’re travelling, especially across the street or down the sidewalk.”

Vaughn adds, it’s a good idea to know the neighborhoods you’ll be trick-or-treating in, and as a general rule you should stick to houses that have their front porch lights on. Finally, if people are out driving during Beggar’s Night, he asks that they slow down and be ready for the possibility of kids running into the streets.
