For the last two weeks, Perry Hometown Heritage has been hosting a unique exhibit at the Carnegie Library Museum on events from Dallas County’s past.
Alissa Whitmore, Research Assistant for Hometown Heritage, created the exhibit, which highlights events including a visit from one of the most famous baseball players in history. “What I’ve tried to do is kind of capture some historic events (and) famous personages that are either from Perry or have passed through. So I have a section on Babe Ruth. Now Babe Ruth actually came to Perry, basically about 95 years close to from today. But October 13th, 1922, Babe Ruth was here playing in a scrimmage game with Perry’s team.”
The exhibit contains photos from that event, as well as a later event when Ruth visited Adel after his retirement. There’s also a section devoted to the King’s Daughters Hospital, which was notable for being the place where Buck Barrow, older brother of the infamous Clyde Barrow, died from injuries suffered in a shootout near Redfield. Other historic figures featured in the exhibit include dancer Betty Mae Harris and cartoonist Snick Hamlin.
The exhibit will run through November 19th at the Carnegie Museum. To learn more about this and other Hometown Heritage events, listen to today’s Perry Fareway Let’s Talk Dallas County program at RaccoonValleyRadio.com.
