A Jefferson man has been sentenced to probation for an incident in Ames.
According to court documents, 26-year-old John Wayne Berry pled guilty to two Class D Felonies for second degree theft and third degree burglary in Story County District Court. He had his two, five-year prison sentences suspended and was placed on probation for a maximum of three years.
The judgement stems from a series of incidents that happened in Ames earlier this year. According to the Ames Police Department, Berry stole 196 items over a six-week period from an apartment that he was sharing with the victim. Berry then sold the items, which deprived the victim of over $16,000. An arrest warrant was issued in early April and Berry was arrested by Jefferson Police Officers and transported to the Story County jail.
Court documents show that Berry was originally charged with a felony for first degree theft and four felonies for third degree burglary. He was also ordered to pay over $1,500 in fines, surcharges and court costs, with an additional $5,890 in victim restitution.
