The Perry Bluejays homecoming game was spoiled Friday night by the second-ranked Dallas Center-Grimes Mustangs, 42-7.
The game got off to an auspicious start as DCG fumbled the ball on their first drive, but they recovered it and ran it all the way to the Perry 7-yard-line. Running back Tanner Epple scored on the next play. The Mustangs scored again in the first quarter on a 12-yard run by Luke Fistler. The second quarter started with another rushing touchdown from Epple, and a 79-yard touchdown run by Fistler. The Mustangs managed to score one last time before halftime on a 42-yard touchdown pass from Damon Clapper to Thomas Erickson. Perry entered the intermission facing a 35-0 deficit.
The game went to a running clock in the second half, and DCG scored on a 5-yard Benjamin Harwood touchdown run on their only possession of the third quarter. The lone bright spot of the game for Perry came with under six minutes to play in the fourth quarter. With the second-stringers in the game for both teams, Sophomore Ever Tobar intercepted the DCG quarterback and returned it for a touchdown and the only score for the Bluejays on the night. The pick-six ended up being the last score for either team, as DCG left Dewey Field with a 42-7 victory, continuing their unbeaten season. Perry had opportunities, as their special teams routinely gave them good starting field position, but the offense stalled on each drive.
The loss drops Perry to 1-4 on the season and 0-3 in the division. Next week they hit the road for a game against Gilbert. Listen to FM 99.7, AM 1310 KDLS on Friday starting at 7 p.m. for live play-by-play coverage.
