The home portion of the high school volleyball schedule began last night for the Greene County Rams. Coach Donna Carhill’s team went 0-2 in matches and 0-6 in sets vs. Heart of Iowa Activities Conference opponent Gilbert and non-conference rival Carroll in the middle school gym in Jefferson. Greene County lost to Gilbert 6-25, 21-25, 17-25. The Rams fell to Carroll 20-25, 20-25, 19-25.
Class 3A number 7 Gilbert was up first and the Tigers hit the Rams with a 15-0 run to start set number one. Greene County led most of set two, but Gilbert put on a late 9-2 run to close out the set. The Tigers maintained a lead of six to eight points throughout much of set three.
Carroll also lost in three sets to Gilbert, but the orange and black Tigers bounced back to sweep the Rams. Set one saw The Tigers lead early and late with Greene County hold a brief lead in the middle of the set. The Rams were up much of set two, but even after falling behind 20-21, were still in it. The Tigers then scored the last four points of the set. The final set of the night had the teams tied 7-7 before Carroll took control and completed the sweep.
Greene County is in action tomorrow in Huxley for the Ballard Tournament. The Rams are 5-8 overall and 12-19 in sets. Their HOIAC record is 1-1.
