At pharmacies and hospitals throughout Dallas County, they are beginning to administer this year’s influenza vaccination.
The peak of flu season is typically in February, but since it can take several weeks or even a month for your body to accept the vaccination, medical professionals say the earlier the better. Flu shots can be administered anywhere from Dallas County Hospital to the Hy-Vee pharmacy. It doesn’t matter where you receive the vaccine, doctors say it’s just important to get one to protect yourself and those around you. The influenza vaccine is recommended for anyone age 6 months and older who don’t have a medical reason to withhold the medicine.
Besides getting a flu shot, Dallas County Public Health says there are other ways to protect yourself from the flu. Tips include: wash your hands frequently; stop smoking; eat plenty of fruits and vegetables; sneeze and cough into your elbow, not your hand; and stay home if you’re sick. The vaccine is your best defense against influenza, but Public Health reminds people even that isn’t 100%. It does, however, considerably lower a person’s risk.
